SAN ANTONIO (October 25, 2022) – Diwali San Antonio Festival of Lights returns to celebrate Indian culture and traditions in the Hemisfair Park on Saturday, November 5, 2022 from 4:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. This year marks the fourteenth anniversary of Diwali San Antonio – one of the city’s most popular annual events. We are celebrating the diversity of India by featuring traditional Indian dance, entertainment, food, and crafts.

The City of San Antonio is proud to support what is growing to be the largest city-sponsored and city-sanctioned Diwali festival in the country. Before the global pandemic, attendance exceeded 40,000 in 2019 after several years of consistent growth. This year, the event will also mark the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of the Republic of India. Therefore, we are honored to welcome representatives of the Indian Government as well as the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for India to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Co-hosted by the City of San Antonio and Anuja SA, Diwali San Antonio is a free event that showcases San Antonio’s Sister-City Agreement with Chennai, India, signed in 2008. Anuja SA has played a significant role to foster relationships between San Antonio and Chennai in the areas of Arts and Culture, Medicine, Education, Business and Commerce, and Sports and Recreation. Since signing the agreement, the City of San Antonio—especially through its Global Engagement Office, has committed to providing residents and visitors with creative cultural programming. In December, Mayor Ron Nirenberg will lead a delegation from San Antonio to India with two city council members including representatives of higher education sector as well as local Indian community.

“DiwaliSA is a one-of-a-kind festival which brings people of all ages and walks of life to celebrate together,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg, “It is also a time of reflection – to consider the challenges faced by ourselves and others. But the Festival of Light reminds us that no matter the difficulties, light triumphs over darkness. Together we can spread a message of compassion, peace, harmony, diversity, and inclusion.  And to all those who are celebrating this joyous event, I wish you, your families and loved ones a Happy Diwali.”

“We are very excited to be presenting our full lineup of entertainment for the first time since 2019,” said Anuia SA President Kausi Subramaniam. “The river parade, diya ceremony, rangoli floor art, dance performances, DJ, and fireworks will all return this year. Come celebrate Diwali with us!”

“This festival provides a unique opportunity for all friends, communities and families to come together and celebrate DiwaliSA, which is one of the world’s most celebrated events,” said Shahrzad Dowlatshahi, Chief Diplomacy & Protocol Officer for the City of San Antonio. “This year’s festival activities are truly a vibrant celebration filled with beautiful elements that everybody can appreciate and enjoy. The footprint of the Diwali this year has been modified from previous years and the attendees will be able to enjoy creative use of different areas within the Hemisfair District.”
