From Cannes debut to ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’, 7 times Aishwarya Rai Bachchan proved to be India’s first global icon
Billionaire Nita Ambani is known as the First Lady of Sports in India. The Reliance Foundation Chairperson has played a crucial role in empowering young athletes and making sports accessible to all. In 2020, she was named in the Top 10 Most Influential Women in Sports list by iSportconnect.
Ambani-owned RIL bought the rights to Mumbai Indians (MI) for a whopping $111.9 million in 2007. Being the most expensive team in the league, Ambani and her eldest son Akash take a special interest in making MI the most successful Indian Premier League (IPL) team with brilliant coaches and mentors.

Of the 15 seasons played since 2008, MI tops the list with five titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 – the highest wins by any team. It was also the runner-up in 2010, and lost to Chennai Super Kings by 22 runs.

From pricey auctions to exciting matches, a financial advisory firm Duff & Phelps revealed that MI became the first IPL franchise to cross the $100 million-mark in 2017.
Known as the country’s top-tier football league for men, the Indian Super League (ISL) was founded in 2014. Nita Ambani is the Chairperson of Football Sports Development Limited which organises ISL.

After realising young athletes don’t get the necessary exposure, she introduced a ‘Young Champs’ initiative through the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS).

The RFYS founder also helps provide complete scholarships, which include education, accommodation and training, to young footballers. In 2017, India successfully hosted the FIFA U-17 World Cup under Ambani’s leadership.
Sports-lover Ambani wants to bring the famous quadrennial sporting event – Olympic Games – to India.

In 2016, she became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), making her the first Indian woman to be a part of the non-governmental sports organisation.

On the eve of the Beijing Winter Olympics closure at the 139th IOC session, India won the bid to host the prestigious meeting the following year for the first time since 1983. Ambani calls it the first step towards the Olympic Movement.

After conquering the cricket and football pitches, Ambani decided to look at popularising basketball.

In October 2019, she welcomed the National Basketball Association (NBA) to India – played between Indiana Pacers (IP) and Sacramento Kings (SK) in Mumbai – for the first time in the country.

She presented the ceremonial ‘Match Ball’ to NBA officials, along with the NBA commissioner Adam Silver.
